Rabbi Tara Feldman and Cantor Adam Davis of Temple Beth-El were joined by Senator Anna Kaplan at NSUH to sound the shofar and offer prayers to health-care heroes.

Rabbi Tara Feldman and Cantor Adam Davis of Temple Beth-El of Great Neck were joined by state Sen. Anna M. Kaplan and North Shore University Hospital’s executive team, emergency department, nurse managers, department directors and chaplaincy team for an honorary sounding of the shofar and to offer prayers, hope and encouragement for the health-care heroes at NSUH, Northwell Health and the greater community on Thursday, September 3, at 8:50 a.m.

The uplifting event is part of Renewal in Elul, a project by Temple Beth-El of Great Neck that features daily Shofar Blasts around the community recognizing and honoring those who give so much of themselves. During the event, words of prayer, hope and encouragement for health-care heroes were followed by the sounding of a ram’s horn, a traditional daily practice in Judaism during the last month of the Hebrew year, Elul.

Elul, the 12th and final month in the Jewish calendar connects the past year with the coming year—and is a time for reflection. During Elul, it is customary to blow the shofar (ram’s horn) every morning to “wake up” and prepare for the approaching High Holy Days. Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, begins on the evening of Sept. 18.
