New Hyde Park-Mineola Runners Club members Harold Axelrod, Greg Nold, Stephen Cipot, Scott Fairgrieve, and Kenneth Ramondino, present a $500 check to Mineola Fire Department Chief Robert Connolly, for the Mineola Junior Fire Department.

Dozens of Mineola Junior Fire Department members volunteered at the Runners Club’s annual USA Track and Field LI 8K championship race and community event in June, held at the Denton Avenue School.

Volunteers receive credit for community service and the runners club donates proceeds from the event for the benefit of supporting organizations. Funds are raised each year through their annual race and community event held each June. This was the 42rd year.

The runners club also supports Boy Scout Troops 298 and 544 of New Hyde Park, and other local organizations. The club’s main charity is the Nassau County Firefighter’s Operation Wounded Warrior program—which offers services to wounded veterans on Long Island, as well as at Walter Reid, Camp Lajune, and Fort Bragg.

The Firefighters provide goods and services beyond what the VA provides. In December, the firefighters delivered 60 IPads, 10 PCs, and two packed U-Haul trucks to military personnel. For information on this vital local organization, contact the program’s president Joe O’Grady at 516-462-4617

The runners have donated over $40,000 to their charities in the past decade. In 2018 and 2019 the Town of North Hempstead recognized the runners for their dedication to community service.

The 43rd annual Championship Race/Community event will be the first Sunday in June 2020. Sponsors and volunteers are needed. For information on how to become a sponsor, volunteer, and learn about the club, contact Harold Axelrod at bcshja@msn.com
