Performance Poets Association Readings at Station

Join this monthly open mic forum, open to all, coordinated and hosted by George Pafitis in collaboration with the Performance Poets Association, beginning Saturday, Jan. 6 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Station Branch, 26 Great Neck Road (second level), above Best Market.

A featured poet will read for 20 minutes at each session, followed by an open-mic. Participate in reading your own work and/or listen and support others. The next meetings are scheduled for Saturdays, February 3 and March 3, same time and place.

Marc Black’s Musical History of the 50s and 60s Through Popular Song at Main

New York Blues Hall of Fame inductee, Marc Black, will perform a musical tour of the 50s and 60s on Sunday, Jan. 7 at 2:00 p.m. in the Community Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue.

You can sing along with songs as diverse as Itsy Bitsy, Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka -Dot Bikini and Blowin’ in the Wind and by artists ranging from Gene Autry to George Harrison. The program features a slide show sliding people right back in time. Marc will also perform his own group’s top forty hit from 1967… Happy by the ‘Blades of Grass.’

Homework Helpers at Main

Need help with your homework or a quiet place to get your homework done? Join the library for this drop-in program where kids in grades K to 5 can receive homework help from high school students in a group setting. Stop by the Multipurpose Room on the lower level of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue, on each day of the program to check in. The program will run on Mondays and Thursdays from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. on Jan. 8, 11, (closed Jan. 15), 18, 22, 25, 29, Feb. 1, 5, 8, 12, and 15. Great Neck Historical Society “Stepping Stones Lighthouse” Exhibit
Opening Reception at Main

All are invited to join the Great Neck Historical Society for the opening reception of the “Stepping Stones Lighthouse” Exhibit on Monday, Jan. 8 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in the Gallery, Lower Level Lobby of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue. Learn about the fascinating history of the Lighthouse, and plans for its future. Light refreshments will be served. After the reception there will be a presentation, Long Island’s Lighthouses Past and Present by Robert G. Müller at 7:00 p.m. in the Community Room.

Long Island’s Lighthouses Past and Present
presented by Robert G. Müller at Main

 

Join Robert Müller for Long Island’s Lighthouses Past and Present on Monday, Jan. 8 at 7:00 p.m. in the Community Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue.

This program, based on Robert Müller’s 2004 book of the same name, is a fun and educational exploration of more than twenty local light stations and the people who have built and maintained them for over 220 years. It illustrates the diversity and depth of Long Island’s local lighthouse heritage with images from the 1870s to the present.

Robert Müller is also the author of New York State Lighthouses, the founding president of the Long Island Lighthouse Society, a past president of the East Islip Historical Society, and has served as a volunteer at several lighthouses. He received the US Lighthouse Society’s President’s Award for “outstanding contributions to lighthouse preservation.” He is currently a National Park Service volunteer at the Fire Island Lighthouse and serves on the Stepping Stones Lighthouse Preservation Committee.

Great Decisions facilitated by Librarian Christy Orquera at Main

Join Librarian Christy Orquera when she facilitates the Library’s first Great Decisions program on Tuesday, Jan. 9 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue. The first topic for discussion will be the Waning of Pax Americana(?).

Great Decisions is America’s largest discussion program on world affairs. The program model involves reading the Great Decisions Briefing Book, watching the DVD and meeting in a Discussion Group to discuss the most critical global issues facing America today. Each year, eight topics are chosen by a panel of experts.

Handwriting Analysis with Graphologist Pat Siegel at Main

Join graphologist Pat Siegel on Wednesday, Jan. 10 at 7:00 p.m. in the Community Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue. Pat will explain the basics of handwriting analysis as a personality assessment tool.

This presentation is designed to give attendees a general understanding about how to explore handwriting analysis, also known as graphology, on their own. This is a different discipline from handwriting identification which is used to identify whether handwriting is authentic.

Aging and the Biology of Belief: Living Healthier and Longer with Librarian Mimi Rabizadeh at Main

Librarian Mimi Rabizadeh will discuss scientist Bruce Lipton’s research on mind-body-spirit connection and how your beliefs can affect your biology and health on Thursday, Jan. 11 at 12:00 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue.
