Students from the Center Street School presented a special tribute to the members of the board, at the Herricks Public Schools’ Oct. 24 board of education meeting. In honor of Board of Education Recognition Week, observed from Oct. 21-25, they prepared a gift for the Board featuring their artistic talents.

Under the direction of art teacher Doreen McDevitt, the students created a masterpiece that portrayed a thumbprint tree. Ms. McDevitt and Principal Brennan Bierwiler created a video that showed the project’s behind-the-scenes development. The piece, which displays the text, “Thank you for helping us grow,” was framed and bestowed upon the Board.

The students also created their own individual tree illustrations that conveyed gratitude for the educational experience. They shared their pieces and read their reflections of what they are thankful for before the board of education, administration, and audience. The district’s field trips, art, and athletic opportunities, food services, mindfulness initiatives, flexible seating and academic offerings were among the many aspects that they highlighted.

“On behalf of all of our faculty and staff, parents, students and community members, I am proud to say how much we value, respect and thank the board members for all their hard work,” Herricks Superintendent Fino Celano said. “They provide opportunities for each and every student of this district, and that’s a very special thing.”
