Chaminade High School senior Philip Porter III, 18, died Saturday night in his sleep.

The East Northport resident affectionately known as PJ, Porter had complained about soreness before going to bed Saturday night to his sister Katie Porter, Newsday reported.

“The entire Chaminade family mourns PJ’s passing,” Chaminade President Bro. Thomas Cleary said. “He was an exceptionally kind young man — and he was known for that by his classmates. They are deeply saddened over a friend gone too soon. Chaminade students joined together Monday, led by our chaplain, to pray for PJ’s eternal peace. Our guidance counselors are available for any students who wish to share their thoughts or pain.”

A wake will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the M.A. Connell Funeral Home at 934 New York Ave. in Huntington Station. A memorial service will follow at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Anthony of Padua Church at 20 Cheshire Place in East Northport.

During his years at Chaminade, Porter was a member of the Columbian Squires, a junior Knights of Columbus chapter at the high school and was a dedicated French student throughout his career.

Matt Markham, Chaminade’s director of communications, said he had recently been accepted to Marist College in Poughkeepsie, his first choice.

Though seniors were out of the building this week as the underclassmen prepare for exams, the lower classmen began Monday with a prayer for Porter and his family.
