Dr. Christopher Gitz, the former principal of Lindenhurst High School, will move to Great Neck South High School as principal on Aug. 1, about 27 years since he graduated there.

“Being a product of the Great Neck Public Schools and a 1990 graduate of South High, I am very excited about giving back to the community and school district that has provided me and my family with so much throughout my life,” Gitz said.

Gitz succeeds Susan Elliot, who served as principal of South High School since July 2008.  Elliot previously said that she was retiring to travel and spend more time with her family, but that she would miss being in the school.

“To be able to end my career here is really an honor,” she said in a previous interview.

Gitz brings experience from Lindenhurst High School, where he was principal since 2014, and from Smithtown High School West, where he was assistant principal.

Before that he was the K-12 supervisor of mathematics in the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Central School District and assistant principal of High School East in the Half Hollow Hills Central School District.

Gitz started his career as a math teacher at Valley Stream North High School in 1996, before going to Harborfields High School in Greenlawn.

He holds a bachelor of administration in accounting from Hofstra University, a master of science in mathematics education from LIU Post and a doctorate in educational administration and supervision from St. John’s University.

“I look forward to working with the students, the faculty, the staff and the community as we work together to provide the students of South High with an educational experience that continues to be outstanding,” he said.

Gitz said he will speak more about his appointment after Aug. 1, when he officially begins as principal.
