Join George Pafitis when he hosts a Performance Poets Association Reading on Saturday, April 6 from 1 to 3:00 p.m. at the Station Branch, 26 Great Neck Road (2nd level), Gardens at Great Neck Plaza, above Best Market. A monthly open mic forum, participate in reading your own work and/or listen and support others.

Gilbert & Sullivan Light Opera Company of Long Island Perform “The Gondoliers” at Main

All are invited to enjoy the Gilbert & Sullivan Light Opera Company of Long Island’s performance of “The Gondoliers,” arranged by the Music Advisory Committee, on Sunday, April 7 at 2 p.m. in the community room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Ave. One of the most popular of all the Gilbert & Sullivan operas, “The Gondoliers” is the story of two carefree Venetian gondoliers, Marco and Giuseppe Palmieri, whose carefree life of wine, women and song is disrupted when they discover that they are not really brothers — that one of them is the long-lost heir to the throne of Barataria, stolen from the royal court as an infant. Great Neck school district residents have priority for seating. Doors will open at 1:30 p.m.

Philately Anyone? with Librarian Christy Orquera at Main

Explore the world of stamp collecting with Great Neck Librarian Christy Orquera on Monday, April 8 at 2 p.m. in the community room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Ave. Learn about the American Philatelic Society, the world’s largest organization for collectors, hobbyists and enthusiasts, and some of the very basics about stamp collecting, valuation, selling, useful resources, stamp dealers and upcoming stamp shows. No appraisals will be given in this workshop.

Frida Kahlo: Appearances Can Be Deceiving at Main

Art Historian Mary Vahey will present a lecture and slide program exploring Frida Kahlo’s creative vision and self-crafted identity on Tuesday, April 9 at 2 p.m. in the community room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Ave. This is the subject of a current Brooklyn Museum of Art exhibit. Vahey is an art historian and adjunct assistant professor at the State University of New York.

Newspaper Databases at Main

Come to a demonstration of the library’s newspaper databases on Tuesday, April 9 at 2 p.m. in the large multipurpose room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Ave. Learn how to obtain information from The Historical New York Times, covering the years 1851-2015, containing searchable first-hand accounts and unparalleled coverage of the politics, society and events of the time. This database provides searchable full text, full page, and article-level images. Also learn how to find articles from the current issues of The New York Times, 1980 to the present.

Craft for a Cause Community Service for Teens

Volunteer and make a difference for local community organizations. Earn community service by participating in craft and writing projects for a variety of interests and abilities. Upcoming opportunities will be held on Tuesdays, April 9, 16, 23, 30, May 7, and 14 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Lakeville Branch, 475 Great Neck Road. Your service will impact youth, families, veterans, pets, and more. Come as often as you would like. No registration needed. AARP Tax Assistance at Parkville

AARP Tax Preparers will assist in preparing and filing simple federal tax returns online only on Wednesday, April 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (last appointment 1 p.m.) at the Parkville Branch, 10 Campbell Street (off Lakeville Road), New Hyde Park. This is the last day that these tax preparers will be at Parkville. You must have an appointment and bring all relevant tax papers, including a copy of last year’s return, photo identification, copies of Social Security cards for all individuals on the tax return, all tax related forms (example: W2, bank statements, real estate statements, etc.) and a canceled check.
