Fifteen Northwell Health hospitals have earned the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. The designation recognizes each health care facility for its commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines.

To receive the Get With The Guidelines Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award, each hospital met specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at a set level for a designated period. These measures include evaluation of the proper use of medications and other stroke treatments aligned with the most up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients. Before discharge, patients should also receive education on managing their health, get a follow-up visit scheduled, as well as other care transition interventions.

The 15 Northwell Health hospitals to earn the Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award are: Glen Cove Hospital, Huntington Hospital, Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center in New Hyde Park, Long Island Jewish Forest Hills, Long Island Jewish Valley Stream, Mather Hospital in Port Jefferson, North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, Northern Westchester Hospital in Mt. Kisco, Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, Phelps Hospital in Sleepy Hollow, Plainview Hospital, Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, Staten Island University Hospital and Syosset Hospital.

In addition, Lenox Hill Hospital, North Shore University Hospital, Northern Westchester Hospital, Peconic Bay Medical Center, Phelps Hospital, Southside Hospital, and Staten Island University Hospital received “Target: Stroke Elite Plus Honor Roll” recognition. Glen Cove Hospital, Huntington Hospital, Mather Hospital, LIJ Forest Hills, LIJ Valley Stream, and Plainview Hospital achieved “Target: Stroke Elite Honor Roll” status. Long Island Jewish Medical Center and Syosset Hospital received “Target: Stroke Honor Roll” status. Hospitals earned this additional recognition by meeting quality measures developed to reduce the time between the patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment with the clot-buster tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA, the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat ischemic stroke.

“The Get With The Guidelines – Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Awards demonstrates that our highly trained physicians and nurses throughout Northwell Health are committed to providing care that has been clinically proven to quickly and efficiently treat stroke patients and save lives,” said Dr. Souhel Najjar, senior vice president and executive director of Northwell Health’s neurology service line.

As New York State-designated stroke centers, the 15 Northwell Health hospitals have multidisciplinary stroke teams available 24 hours a day to assess and treat stroke patients.
