Adelphi launches health innovation awards

The Island Now

Adelphi University will be holding its first-ever Health Innovation Awards on Nov. 29 at 6 p.m., awarding those who have made contributions to innovation in health.

Applications are now being accepted with a deadline of Friday, Oct. 13.

Adelphi’s Center for Health Innovation, which aims to improve health, healthcare systems and public health, initiated the award.

The ceremony will honor regional innovators, individuals or organizations who have made remarkable contributions in the health of our communities.

“My belief is that the measure of health is on a community level,” said Dr. Elizabeth Cohn, CHI executive director about the shifting nature of our health system and the importance of looking at health at the community level. “Working to change aspects of community health can change the health of our nation.”

The awards categories include:

Adelphi University Health Innovation Award for Health Literacy and Health Education: Recognizes an individual or organization who has highlighted new models, methods, frameworks or systems that improve Health Literacy or Health Education for patients, families or the communities they serve.

Adelphi University Health Innovation Award in Public Health Preparedness: Recognizes an individual or organization who has created a community program or initiative to better prepare the public for a public health emergency or disaster.

Adelphi University Health Innovation Award in Health Care Delivery Systems: Recognizes an individual or organization whose leadership has highlighted new models, methods, frameworks or systems that improve the care of patients, families or the communities they serve.

Adelphi University Health Innovation Award in Community-Engaged Arts and Health: Recognizes an individual or organization who has created a community program or initiative that recognizes or celebrates the role of Arts in the health and well-being of communities.

Nominations should include the problem being addressed, the steps taken to develop the innovation, the innovation itself, and the impact the innovation has had on the selected population.

The 2017 winners will be chosen by a committee that includes faculty from across the university and members of the CHI Advisory Board.

Adelphi University Center for Health Innovation is the primary resource in our region for innovative, multidisciplinary, evidence-based responses to improving health, healthcare systems and public health.

CHI creates and fosters community-focused, interdisciplinary academic programming, applied research, community partnerships and leadership — all with the goal of meeting current and emergent health needs of Long Island and our region.
