The Art Guild of Port Washington is happy to announce its summer schedule of classes and workshops for children and adults.

This year, five children’s art workshops for ages 5 to 12 will be offered. Children will have the opportunity to explore different materials and techniques shifting between projects in a fun and supportive atmosphere. Lessons typically include a simple art concept, demonstration of materials, and encourage children to use their imaginations. The workshops are 9 a.m. – 12 p.m., Monday – Friday each week and will be held June 25 – June 29 (ages 6-12); July 16 – 20 (ages 5-7); July 23 – 27 (ages 8-12); July 30 – Aug. 3 (ages 5-7); or Aug. 6 – 10 (ages 8-12).

The Art Guild will hold its fourth annual CreARTive on Saturday, Aug. 18. This fun and free afternoon is for children ages 5 and up and their families. Children will be given the opportunity to work in printmaking, clay, painting, tie-dye and collage in the backyard of Elderfields Preserve. (Held indoors in the event of rain.)

An advanced portfolio studio for high school students will meet on Mondays and Thursdays from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. beginning July 16.  This 12-session course is designed to assist advanced drawing/painting/2-D design students entering their freshman through senior years. The instructor will mentor and critique projects and there will be open studio time for students to learn or enhance a specific skill or technique.

Several adult classes are open for registration this summer. Oil painting (all levels) with Joan Stevens is an eight-week class which begins Tuesday, June 26. This class will cover many aspects of oil painting, from the very basics – preparing a canvas, composition design, and color mixing – to demonstrations on the color palette and painting applications. Get Sharper (all levels) with Stephanie Navon-Jacobson is a four-week class which begins Monday, Aug. 6. Refine your drawing skills and hone your powers of observation. Some of the materials that may be explored are: graphite, pen and ink, charcoal, markers, and. A four-week, all-levels “Abstract in Watercolor” class with Eileen Neville is already underway on Wednesday evenings and an eight-week session of Life Drawing with Nude Model (non-instructional) will announce new dates in July.

Don’t miss an opportunity to study “The Still Life & Floral in Oil” with one of the modern masters of the still life, Robert Johnson on July 13-15. The workshop will include demonstrations and instruction illustrating the principles underlying successful still life arrangement as well as carrying a painting to its artistic conclusion. Each student will work from their own still life and will receive one-on-one instruction and critique time with Robert.

On Aug. 4-5, Lisa Daria Kennedy will teach “Embrace the Practice – Daily Painting Workshop.” This workshop will combine demos, in-class assignments and individual instruction to teach students the techniques to create fresh, deliberate marks, simplify the process and find the joy of painting every day. Howard Rose returns on Saturday, Aug. 25 for smartphone photography. This will be Howard’s second time offering this informative and popular workshop at The Art Guild. All are welcome – from beginners to more advanced. Howard will cover all of the basic elements of the smartphone camera and will give tips to create the best design and choose exciting subjects. He will also review advanced editing apps to raise the quality of your photos.
