Jerry Balentine, D.O., has been named executive vice president and chief operating officer at New York Institute of Technology.

Jerry Balentine has been named executive vice president and chief operating officer at New York Institute of Technology.

In this newly created position, reporting to New York Tech President Henry C. “Hank” Foley, Balentine will evaluate new opportunities for university growth and expansion, especially in the area of faculty research, and oversee strategic resource allocation, among other responsibilities.

The new position complements the responsibilities Balentine holds as vice president for health sciences and medical affairs, a role he assumed in 2014. Balentine joined New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine as a faculty member in 2009 and was dean from 2018 to 2020.

During his deanship, NYITCOM grew its research output in several areas, added a Ph.D. program in biological and medical sciences, expanded programs at NYITCOM’s Arkansas site in partnership with Arkansas State University, and created award-winning health and wellness programs for medical students.

“Jerry is a highly strategic thinker, experienced in effectively and efficiently managing multifaceted organizations and their operations quite successfully. This, combined with his leadership skills and extensive experience in health care management, make him perfect for this role as we continue to position our strengths in the highly competitive higher education field. Much of what he learned in that milieu is transferable to our situation,” Foley said.

Foley appointed Balentine as co-chair of New York Tech’s long-term strategic planning initiative in 2018, setting in motion a planning process to develop a Strategic Three-Year Action Plan to ensure a prosperous and sustainable future for the university. As COO, Balentine will continue to lead this effort with co-chair Junius Gonzales, provost and vice president for academic affairs.

Balentine’s distinguished career has included serving as chief medical officer and executive vice president of St. Barnabas Hospital and Healthcare System in the Bronx, and as a hospital medical director, emergency department director, and residency director.

“In practicing medicine, running health care organizations, and educating medical students, common denominators include focusing on positive outcomes, building trust and engagement, and showing empathy. These attributes can help transform lives and organizations, and I look forward to applying them to other parts of New York Tech, especially in today’s unprecedented environment and also when we emerge into the unknown ‘new normal,’” Balentine said.

A graduate of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Balentine completed his internship at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Philadelphia and his emergency medicine residency at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center in the Bronx, where he also served as chief resident. He earned his undergraduate degree from McDaniel College in Westminster, Md.
