The Town of North Hempstead was recently honored by Car Free Day Long Island for their dedication to encourage residents and employees to take part in the 9th Annual Car Free Day Long Island event, which was held on Sept. 22. The day-long celebration, which was sponsored by the Town, was part of North Hempstead’s effort to go green and to reduce its carbon footprint.

North Hempstead was recognized for earning the highest number of Car Free Day pledges of any Town on Long Island.

Car Free Day is held annually and encourages individuals to consider the negative impact of single-occupancy vehicles.

This year, over 2,000 Long Islanders took the Car Free Day pledge and joined with 46 countries and over 2,000 cities around the world to combat climate change. This resulted in the avoidance of 42,430 miles of driving and over 21 tons of CO2 emissions.
