Chanukah celebration in Port Washington

The Island Now

Chabad of Port Washington will once again be holding their grand annual Chanukah Menorah Lighting Celebration at Bar Beach Park like it was done last year.  At the time, the location of this event was switched from LIRR on Main Street to Bar Beach in order to provide a safer environment from Covid, which a drive-in event provided.

This year, as Covid is still with us but not as severe as last year, the plans are to hold a hybrid event: There will be a drive-in and a giant video wall and all the elements of last year’s event. However, there will also be a seating area in front of the cars for those who are comfortable joining such an in-person event.

The event will take place on the last day of Chanukah, Sunday, Dec. 5 from 4:00-6:00 p.m.  While normally Chabad holds its event on the first night of Chanukah, this year it is being moved because of Thanksgiving weekend coinciding with the first day.

The event will require pre-registration, which will be available on the Chabad website: chabadpw.org.  Any Port Washington resident who registers will be sent a Menorah & Candles kit to their home in time for the first day of Chanukah.  Upon arrival to the event each car will also receive a full welcome packet including latkes, donuts, chocolate gelt, drinks, dreidels and popcorn.

The event will feature two giant video walls, an upgrade from last year’s event where there was only one. The idea is to set things up in a manner that no one is too far from the screens. Last year, with only one screen, and the turnout far exceeding expectations, many people were too far back to get a good view of the proceedings. With two screens and the layout of the cars and seating area horizontal rather than vertical, everyone will have a good spot close up enough for excellent viewing.  The menorah will again ride the lift and be lit with the Hempstead Harbor Bay as its backdrop.

Watch your mailboxes and the local newspapers for advertisements on the event with details of the features to expect.

Our thanks to the Peter & Jeri Dejana Foundation for generously sponsoring this event.
