The Community Chest of Port Washington has selected Fred Falconer Jr. as the 2019 Citizen of the Year for his remarkable contributions to the Port Washington community.

He will be honored at a ceremony on Monday, April 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the Port Washington Public Library, in the Lapham Room.

The Community Chest’s Citizen of the Year Award recognizes “a lifetime of outstanding volunteer service on behalf of the citizens of Port Washington” and has been awarded annually since 1969. The Citizen of the Year ceremony and reception are free and all members of the community are invited to attend.

Falconer was born and raised in Port Washington and has lived all his life on our peninsula except for the two years he spent on active duty with the U.S. Army in Germany. Falconer sets an example of the Community Chest’s motto: “The People of Port Helping the People of Port.”

For 46 years, he has been devoted to helping our community through his volunteer service with the Port Washington Fire Department, Flower Hill Hose Company. He has bravely fought fires in town and has served on the Flower Hill Hose Company Board of Directors as President and board member.

Falconer has been a devoted member of the Port Washington Chamber of Commerce, the Lions Club, the United Methodist Church, CancerCare, Business Improvement District, PYA and PAL, often serving on their boards of directors.

He was proudly Grand Marshal in the 2016 Pride in Port Parade, and he was honored by the Port Washington Senior Citizens Center in 2013 for his exemplary service.

Falconer is a third-generation owner of S.F. Falconer, Florist. Through his extreme generosity to many local nonprofit organizations, he has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to the strength of Port Washington.

In 2019, Community Chest is awarding grants to 28 nonprofit organizations that provide a wide range of vital services to residents of all ages, 3 months to 99 years old. The Community Chest also provides office space at below-market rates to nonprofit organizations helping them achieve their missions.

To honor Falconer and to raise money for its grantee organizations, the Community Chest prepares a journal and invites community members to support the journal. For more information about the event, the journal, or to RSVP, contact the Community Chest at (516) 767-2121 or info@portchest.org.
