Dr. Raj K. Narayan, Dr. Michael Schulder appointed to board of The New York Society for Neurosurgery

Dr. Raj K. Narayan Northwell Health’s senior vice president and executive director of neurosurgery services, has been appointed as president of The New York Society for Neurosurgery (NYSN). In addition Dr. Michael Schulder vice chair of neurosurgery at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) in Manhasset and Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center in New Hyde Park, has been appointed as the Society’s secretary treasurer.

The NYSN is dedicated to supporting and developing the field of neurosurgery in the New York metro area. The society seeks to cultivate life-long learning for clinicians, to support research and teaching and to advance knowledge.

“Dr. Michael Schulder, past president Mark Bilsky and I will be working together to enhance neurosurgical education and to create a collaborative and friendly venue for the neurosurgeons of New York to enjoy academic and social interactions,” said Narayan.

In addition to his role as SVP and executive director of neurosurgery, Narayan is also chair of neurosurgery at NSUH and LIJ Medical Center and serves as chair and professor of neurosurgery at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Dr. Narayan is a diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgery and a member of numerous organizations, including: the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, The Society of Neurological Surgeons, the Academy of Neurological Surgery and the American College of Surgeons. He is internationally known for his work on traumatic brain injury and he played a leading role in developing the national Traumatic Brain Injury Management Guidelines. He has published in numerous publications and has served as visiting professor all over the globe.

Schulder, in addition to his role as vice chair of neurosurgery, is also director of the hospital’s neurosurgery residency program; director of the Brain Tumor Center at NSUH and LIJ Medical Center; and co-director of the Center for Stereotactic Radiosurgery at Northwell’s Cancer Institute. Schulder is president of the World Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery and has served as past president of the American Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery. He’s also founding vice-president of the Intraoperative Imaging Society; past president of the Section on History of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons; and an elected member of the American Academy of Neurological Surgery and the Society of Neurological Surgeons. His research and many publications have focused primarily on new techniques for image-guided surgery, including intraoperative MRI.
