Former Great Neck Library Director Joseph Covino dies

Great Neck Library remembers former Library Director Joseph Covino who passed in January.

Joseph Covino, Director of the Great Neck Library from 1969 to 1986, passed away this past January 2021.

Prior to becoming the Director of the Great Neck Library, he served as Head of Reference when the Library was located on Arrandale Avenue in what is now Great Neck House.

As Director, Joseph Covino was to redefine the Library for a public ready for new ideas and concepts. He envisioned the Library as a place where community members, adults, children and students of all ages could come and find materials to suit their interests, as well as college students who would have a place to study and find information for their assignments. He developed excellent reference and circulating collections during his tenure.

Under his leadership, professional caliber concerts, art shows and film programs were initiated by inspired and enthusiastic volunteer committees, and a wide variety of children’s programs were presented.

Joe was responsible for the creation of Levels, the Library’s teen center. This unique facility, the first of its kind in any library, opened in 1975 and immediately became popular, achieving national recognition.

Joe Covino is remembered for his forward thinking, administrative guidance, and his active role in the community. He was a true pioneer in the Library field.
