Girls Scouts of Nassau County fall fundraiser helps empower girls wherever they are

Girl Scouts of Nassau County recently held its annual Food and Wine Pairing Fall Fundraiser, which was attended by almost 100 Girl Scout community members. This year’s event had the theme “Mobilizing our Mission,” to celebrate the establishment of Girl Scout’s new Traveling Trefoil, a van that will bring Girl Scout programming throughout communities in the county.

The annual event is one of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s major fundraising initiatives of the year to build awareness of the exciting academically and socially empowering programs that provide Girl Scouts with the resources to become leaders in the future. Proceeds went toward supporting the Traveling Trefoil, to help outfit the van with resources and supplies to provide a full Girl Scout experience in its various mobile settings.

“Thank you to all our attendees for supporting our work that all girls deserve a chance to explore their interests, skills, and talents,” said Randell M. Bynum, chief executive officer, Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “Sponsors and attendees are taking Mobilizing Our Mission to another level, they’re the reason why the Traveling Trefoil is possible. Thanks to the community’s support, we’ll be able to provide girls, who cannot attend typical troop settings or access regular resources with the same opportunities to grow.”

The pandemic highlighted that approximately 20 percent of Girl Scouts in Nassau County don’t have sufficient access to devices or a reliable internet connection to continue accessing various benefits of the Girl Scout programming.

The Traveling Trefoil is a customized mobile van that is fully equipped with computers, STEM activities, and more to help combat learning loss and promote social and mental health amid the pandemic. It was generously funded through a CARES Act grant, facilitated by the Town of Hempstead.

During the Wine and Food Pairing Fundraiser, attendees had the opportunity to sponsor items on the wish list to equip the van with everything Girl Scouts need to grow and learn. These included several of the STEM, Outdoors, Life Skills, and Entrepreneurship activities that make up the pillars of the Girl Scouts experience.

“There are many girls in Nassau County that cannot take full advantage of the opportunities and benefits that Girl Scouts offers,” said Bynum. “These are girls with untapped talents and leadership skills who just need opportunities and access to realize their potential. It is up to us to adapt and meet our girls where they are, and this initiative is just one part of that mission.”
