The Great Neck Water Pollution Control District (GNWPCD) is proud to announce that it is once again holding its “Shed the Meds” event on Sunday, November 8, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at its headquarters located at 236 East Shore Road. The District encourages the Great Neck community to participate in its contactless, drive-thru event that provides residents with a convenient opportunity to safely and responsibly dispose of their unused or expired medications, ultimately keeping them out of the community’s water ways.
“The importance of this event and the impact it has on protecting the quality of our facility, aquifers and environment is significant,” said GNWPCD Chairman Jerry Landsberg. “This event is contactless and socially distant so our residents can participate while ensuring their safety. We look forward to everyone’s contribution in protecting our community’s precious water sources.”
The District hosts this event each year to help put an end to the improper disposal of medications, which can have a negative impact on our environment. When medications get thrown into the garbage, they eventually end up in a landfill where their potentially-harmful contents are then absorbed into the ground. Similarly, when medications are flushed down the toilet, their contents are dissolved into the wastewater that is ultimately discharged into the bay after processing.
As in years past, the Great Neck Water Pollution Control District has partnered with Reach Out America, the Great Neck Breast Cancer Coalition, North Shore Action, the Nassau County Police Department, Northwell Health and the Great Neck North High School Key Club. Due to the community’s continued participation and enthusiasm surrounding this event, the District has been able to collect more than 1,350 pounds of pharmaceutical waste over the last five years.

The Great Neck Water Pollution Control District (GNWPCD) is a commissioner-run Special Improvement District within the Town of North Hempstead.
