The Lions Club of Great Neck has a proud, 85-year history on the peninsula, providing services to the blind and visually-impaired, as well as other civic programs. Chartered by Lions International in 1935, the club supports guide dog training and placement, vision camp for the blind, and the Long Island Eye Bank, among others.
Ten years before the Great Neck club was established, at the Lions 1925 convention, Helen Keller addressed the membership and challenged them to take up the cause of the blind and visually impaired, and that became the club’s signature issue. Today, with over 1.4 million members worldwide and clubs in over 200 countries, Lions is the world’s largest service organization.
Early last year the Great Neck club embarked on a membership drive, starting with placement of eyeglass donation boxes in several locations. District Governor Terri Oster, who oversees several Nassau County clubs including Great Neck, said “Unfortunately, the pandemic hit at exactly that moment and membership plans had to be put on hold. Now, as more and more people are vaccinated and able to start resuming normal activities, the club plans to offer a series of virtual meetings for anyone who would like to know more about Lions in general and the Great Neck club in particular.”
