Great Neck resident Steven Pegalis has been selected for the highly regarded list, 2020 Best Lawyers in America. Fewer than 5% of attorneys in the U.S. are recognized to this list, which is a result of extensive research, and peer and client review. 2020 will be the 14th consecutive year that Pegalis has been recognized.

Pegalis is the founder of Pegalis Law Group, and one of the nation’s foremost medical malpractice trial lawyers. In 2019, he obtained a mediated settlement in the amount of $8.5 million dollars for a young woman who lost her mother due to medical negligence.

His most recent jury verdict, also in 2019, was in Nassau County, NY, in the amount of $4.7 million dollars, following the client’s treatment for a brain aneurysm. The jury unanimously found the doctor liable for medical negligence and lack of informed consent.

Pegalis is the author of “American Law of Medical Malpractice”, Volumes 1-3, now in its 3rd edition. In nearly 50 years as an advocate for seriously injured victims, he has obtained some of the highest jury verdicts in New York State history. One of his most noted trial verdicts was for $116 million dollars for his client, a brain-injured child. He and the Pegalis Law Group have worked tirelessly with more than two thousand injured individuals and their families.

Pegalis was the only lawyer to be named both the 2017 “Lawyer of the Year” on Long Island, for Plaintiffs’ Personal Injury Litigation, and the 2016 “Lawyer of the Year,” for Plaintiffs’ Medical Malpractice lawyer in New York, by Best Lawyers in America. He was also honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the New York State Trial Lawyers Association in 2016.

In 2015, Pegalis was named co-director of the Patient Safety Project initiative at New York Law School. It focuses on making significant contributions to medical safety and promoting innovative health law policies for the public good. He serves on the NYLS Board of Trustees, was an Adjunct Professor of Law, and was honored with the school’s Groundbreaker Award for a lifetime commitment to his clients, and successfully pursuing their rights with passion.

Pegalis is an advocate of the American Board of Trial Advocacy, a Dean Emeritus of the New York State Trial Lawyers Institute, and a member of the American Association for Justice, and the National Board of Trial Advocacy. He is an Associate in Law of the American College of Legal Medicine and is AV rated on Martindale-Hubbell for professional excellence since 1982.
