Local Great Neck Plaza resident, George Abrahams will be displaying his artwork in the Village Courtroom for the month of February.

Born in Cape Town in the Republic of South Africa, George immigrated to the United States of America with his wife and three young children.

George has lived in Lake Success and Great Neck Plaza for 42 years. Growing up in beautiful Cape Town he was always fascinated by the beauty of the countryside its green and yellow hills of wheat and corn, towering mountains, and a kaleidoscope of vineyards running from valley to valley, light and shade, and the interplay of colors. Reflections have always featured in George’s paintings.

While he was a practicing attorney in Cape Town, he took painting classes with Philip Terblanche, who later became a well-known and exceptional landscape painter. George’s style of painting has always been influenced by Philip and also by Jay. H. Pierneef and Gregoire Boonzaaier, both of whom were very successful artists in South Africa and are now deceased.

After a hiatus of several years while establishing himself as an attorney in New York, George picked up his brushes again, fascinated by the landscapes of New York and elsewhere. George’s artistic process starts with photographs, taken during his travels and then painting the photographed scenes when he returns to Great Neck. His upcoming exhibition features landscapes from England, South Africa, and the United States.

During the late summer and the beginning of winter, George finished up a number of his paintings which will be displayed a Great Neck Plaza Village Hall, 2 Gussack Plaza, Great Neck, from 6-7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 19 and will be open to view on weekdays during business hours (9 a.m.-4:45 p.m.) until Feb. 28.

All are welcome to the opening session (Wednesday, Feb. 19 from 6-7:30 p.m.). Light refreshments will be served. The displayed paintings will be for sale by private arrangement with the artist.

If you are an emerging or established artist, looking for a new venue to showcase your work, then you may want to consider exhibiting with the Village of Great Neck Plaza. We are interested in seeing your work and publicly displaying it in our courtroom, which is outfitted as a gallery with hanging wires to accommodate a variety of picture sizes.

We are currently putting out this call for artists and portfolio submissions for exhibits through the end of 2019. If you wish to consider exhibiting with us, please contact the Mayor’s Assistant, at (516) 482-4500, or email mayorsassistant@greatneckplaza.net, to set up an appointment to view your portfolio and our exhibit hall.

Generally an exhibit is displayed for approximately 4 to 6 weeks. Works can be for sale; however, artists may not label prices on their pieces, and instead may offer their artwork for sale in a separate catalog handout listing.
