Memories Captured: Judy Friedman Art Exhibit Opening Reception at Main Library Gallery

Join Judy Friedman for the opening reception of her Memories Captured Art Exhibit on Sunday, Dec. 15 at 3:30 p.m. in the Main Library’s Lower Lobby Gallery, 159 Bayview Ave.

Through her work, Judy Friedman recreates places that she has visited and objects that she treasures. She uses the contrast of lights and darks to guide her in her renderings. The exhibit runs from Dec. 14 to Jan. 28.

AARP Driver’s Safety Course at Parkville

Take this AARP Driver’s Safety refresher course for drivers ages 50 and over for reduction in points or discounts on insurance on Saturday, Dec. 14 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Parkville Branch, 10 Campbell St. (off Lakeville Road), New Hyde Park.

Caroline Doctorow at Main: The Great American Folk Song Revival

Singer-Songwriter Caroline Doctorow will perform The Great American Folk Song Revival on Sunday, Dec. 15 at 1:30 p.m. in the Main Library’s Community Room, 159 Bayview Ave.

Caroline Doctorow, called a great champion of American folk music, will focus on the folk music of the early ’60s, presenting the work of important American songwriters and performers such as Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Tom Paxton, Donovan, Richard and Mimi Fariña, Pete Seeger, and others.

She also performs her original compositions and discusses the songwriting process and describes what it was like growing up with her late father, world-renowned author E.L. Doctorow.

Ballet Screening at Main: Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker: In Memory of Gabe Chieco

A ballet screening of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker will be shown on Tuesday, Dec. 17 at 2:00 p.m. in the Main Library’s Community Room, 159 Bayview Ave. This is a New York City Ballet 1965 production with Melissa Hayden, Edward Villella and Patricia McBride. Narrated by Eddie Albert.

This program is in memory of Gabe Chieco, Founding Member, Music Advisory Committee, who passed on Nov. 19.

Non-Fiction Book Club with Librarian Mimi Rabizadeh at Main

Join this non-fiction book club led by librarian Mimi Rabizadeh. Mimi will discuss Rising Strong by Brene` Brown on Tuesday, Dec. 17 at 7:00 p.m. in the Main Library’s Small Multipurpose Room, 159 Bayview Ave.

Matinee Film at Main

The next Wednesday Matinee, the first in-depth documentary film that chronicles the life and themes of the iconic Fiddler on the Roof, will be shown on Dec. 18 at 2:00 p.m. at the Main Library, 159 Bayview Ave.

Mindfulness Meditation facilitated by Carolyn Carpentiere at Main

Join Carolyn Carpentiere for Mindfulness Meditation on Wednesday, Dec. 18 at 7:15 p.m. in the Main Library’s Community Room, 159 Bayview Ave.

Meditation is a practice that strengthens our focus and attention, as well as releases, stress to stay healthy. Open to all skill levels. Library chairs will be available.

Carolyn received her 200-hour yoga certification at Long Island Yoga School in 2009 and has continued to work in and study many other holistic solutions to health including Mindfulness Meditation and Reiki.

Library patrons connected to the Internet are asked to check the website: www.cancellations.com for Library weather-related closings/program cancellations.
In order to access this service, Library District residents can log on to cancellations.com, type in their zip code or Great Neck Library and obtain information on program cancellations or Library closings.

In addition, at no charge, residents can request automatic e-mails from cancellations.com when the Library has posted any information. This is a great way for Library District residents who are connected online to be advised of weather-related changes in Library hours or programs.
