Library Closings 

All Great Neck Library locations will close at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 8 for Yom Kippur Eve. The Station and Lakeville Branches will be closed on Wednesday, Oct. 9 for Yom Kippur. The Main Library and Parkville Branch will remain open on Oct. 9.

Atria Cutter Mill Residents Exhibition Opening Reception

All are invited to the opening reception for Atria Cutter Mill Senior Living’s “Good Vibrations” exhibition on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 2:00 p.m. in the Main Library Gallery, 159 Bayview Avenue. The exhibit will be on view until Oct. 29. This bold collection of color field paintings represents the Senior residents’ lighthearted world view. Together they explore the evocative power of color… individually each artist creates their own brand of pop magic and/or psychedelic cool.

 

Performance Poets Association Readings at Station

Join George Pafitis when he hosts Performance Poets Association Readings on Saturday, Oct.5 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Station Branch, 26 Great Neck Road (2nd level), Gardens at Great Neck Plaza, above Best Market. A monthly Open Mic forum, participate in reading your own work and/or listen and support others.

Meet author, narrator, and filmmaker Jamie Bernstein when she speaks about her book, Famous Father Girl: A Memoir of Growing Up Bernstein on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 1:30 p.m. in the Main Library’s Community Room, 159 Bayview Avenue.

In a deeply intimate and broadly evocative memoir, the eldest daughter of revered composer-conductor Leonard Bernstein offers a rare look at her father on the centennial of his birth. In Famous Father Girl, Bernstein mines the emotional depths of her childhood and invites us into her family’s private world. Books will be available for purchase and signing at the event.

How the Internet Changed the Media presented by Brian Rose at Main

How the Internet Changed the Media and Why Newspapers, Music, and Television Will
Never Be the Same will be presented by Brian Rose on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 2:00 p.m. in the Main Library’s Community Room, 159 Bayview Avenue. This illustrated lecture will examine the many ways the internet has radically transformed the “old” media of newspapers, magazines, the recording industry, film, radio, and television.

 

Fire Prevention and Safety at Parkville

Learn about fire safety from some of our local firefighters from the Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 4:15 p.m. at the Parkville Branch Library, 10 Campbell Street (off Lakeville Road), New Hyde Park.

 

Veterans Donation Drive at Main Library and Parkville Branch

Donations for the Veterans Donation Drive to benefit the Northport VA Medical Center will be accepted through Dec. 6 at the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue, and Parkville Branch, 10 Campbell Street (off Lakeville Road), New Hyde Park.

The Drive is presented by the Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth, the Town Board, and the Town’s Veterans Advisory Committee.

New items only. Items needed are: Trial size toiletries including toothbrushes, toothpaste, quad track razors, shaving cream, unscented body lotion, brushes and combs, deodorant, nail clippers and shampoo; New (or gently used) luggage with wheels; Crocheted blankets (approx. 48” X 60” or larger); Clothing of all types (sizes large and up) are also welcome donations.

YA Volunteers at Great Neck Library

Great Neck Library YA volunteers were recognized at the Library’s Sept. 18 Board of Trustees meeting. All six volunteers are young adults from Great Neck who helped with special events and projects. Liel Ezroni, Shy Ezroni, Anna Kaplan, and Alan Golman have dedicated hours of time to help the Library successfully run Girls Who Code. Jaehyun Kim shared his expertise to teach Latin and Latin Culture to 5th and 6th graders. Ryan Lee has helped out in the Library’s STEM Lab and is running two programs this October.

 

Great Neck Library October 28, 2019 Election Information

Eligible voters will elect one person to the Board of Trustees for a four-year term (January 2020 -January 2024) and one person to the Nominating Committee for a three-year term (January 2020 – January 2023) to fill the seats that will be expiring in January 2020. Those elected will take office at the Library Association Annual Reorganization Meeting in January 2020.

Candidates: Board of Trustees – For expiring seat of Scott J. Sontag, Nominating Committee Candidate: Scott J. Sontag. Nominating Committee – For expiring seat of Patrick McDonnell, Nominating Committee Candidate: Steve M. Jacob.

Voter Eligibility: In order to vote, you must be 18 years of age or older, a resident of the Great Neck School District and either a valid Library cardholder by the Record Date of Oct. 7, 2019, or a registered voter with the Nassau County Board of Elections.

To obtain a valid Great Neck Library card, present one form of identification showing your name and Library School District address at the Circulation Desk of any Great Neck Library location.

In-person voting will be held on Monday, Oct. 28, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Voting sites are the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue, Great Neck 11023 for those residents who live north of Northern Boulevard; and the Parkville Branch Library, 10 Campbell Street (off Lakeville Road), New Hyde Park 11040 for residents who live south of Northern Boulevard.

Voting by Proxy: Proxies must be requested on a form provided by the Library. Proxy request forms are available at all Great Neck Library locations, on the Library’s website at greatnecklibrary.org and also in the Library’s Newsletter. Oct. 22 is the last day for the Library to mail Proxy Ballots. Arrangements will be made by the Director’s Office for Proxies to be picked up in person for proxy requests received after this date. Completed Proxies must be received at the Main Post Office on Welwyn Road by Oct. 25 before 5:00 p.m. or deposited in a locked box at Main or the Branches before 5:00 p.m. on this date.

Great Neck Library Closing/Cancellation Information Online

Library patrons connected to the Internet are asked to check the website: www.cancellations.com for Library weather-related closings/program cancellations.

In order to access this service, Library District residents can log on to cancellations.com, type in their zip code or Great Neck Library and obtain information on program cancellations or Library closings. In addition, at no charge, residents can request automatic e-mails from cancellations.com when the Library has posted any information. This is a great way for Library District residents who are connected online to be advised of weather-related changes in Library hours or programs.
