South High artists honored at Juried Art Show

Works of art created by six South High School students were included in the 2021 Nassau County High School Student Juried Art Competition & Exhibition at the Art Guild in Port Washington. Two artists from South High received honorable mentions for their submissions.

Participating artists from South High were Melad Asli, Jindi Chai, Serena Li, Sophia Liu, Nina Wang, and Derek Yu. Their art teachers are Megan Cashman, Safia Fatimi, Lisa Stancati, and Karen Cuchel, art department head.

Serena Li received an honorable mention for “Covid Self-Portrait” (pencil and watercolor) created last year for Ms. Stancati’s class. Derek Yu received an honorable mention for “Freedom” (pencil) from his Advanced Placement Portfolio, under the guidance of Ms. Cuchel.

A total of 148 submissions were received for the 2021 Nassau County High School Student Juried Art Competition & Exhibition, and 68 pieces were selected for exhibition. The show, which was on display from Nov. 7–27, showcased artwork in a variety of mediums including watercolor, oil, charcoal, colored pencil, and digital media, as well as some three-dimensional pieces. The submissions ranged in subject matter from self-portraits and still-life drawings to abstracts and social statements.

NYSBDA High School Honor Concert Band participants

Six musicians from South High School have been selected to perform in the 2022 New York State Band Directors Association (NYSBDA) High School Honor Concert Band, and one student has been named as an Alternate.

South High participants in the Honor Concert Band, with their instrument, are: Hugh Choi, flute; Charles Li, trumpet; Kan Heng (Martin) Lin, baritone saxophone; Ruiqi Liu, flute; Allen Lu, clarinet; and Sarah Sun, alto saxophone. Additionally, Hannah Fisk has been named as an Alternate for the bassoon. Their instrumental music teachers are Mark Boschen and Michael Schwartz, performing arts department head.

Honor Concert Band participants are selected by a statewide panel of music educators who evaluate recordings of student performances. More than 475 applications were submitted for consideration this year, and 123 students were selected for the band with an additional 20 students designated as alternates. The 2022 NYSBDA Honors Band Conference will take place in Syracuse in early March.
