The Herricks High School Science Department announced that Science Research student Eish Maheshwari has advanced from the regional competitions to compete on the international level at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). Eish, a junior, won first place in his category of Translational Medicine at the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair held on March 15, and also received the Yale Scientist Award.
Eish’s research project, “Strategies for Tuning the Release Profile of Curcumin-Loaded Nanoparticles to Improve Drug Bioavailability and Optimize Sustainable Delivery,” was completed at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine under the mentorship of Joel Friedman, Department of Physiology and Biophysics. At Herricks High School, he is mentored by teacher Renée Barcia.
Considered to be the Olympics of science competitions, Intel ISEF brings more than 1,700 students from the United States and more than 70 countries, regions and territories together to compete for scholarships, grants, internships and a trip to attend the Nobel Prize ceremonies. Eish won an expense-paid trip to this prestigious competition, which will be held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from May 12-18.
Intel ISEF competitors will be provided the opportunity to present their independent research projects to doctoral level scientists, Nobel Laureates, engineers and industry professionals who serve as Intel judges. Eish will compete for more than $5 million in prizes and scholarships at the world’s largest pre-college science fair.
