Herricks Middle School students heard a presentation from mental health awareness speaker Hakeem Rahim on Dec. 19. Rahim, who defines himself as an Acceptance Ambassador, speaks about depression and suicide prevention all across the nation and encourages a stigma-free atmosphere of openness.

Rahim discussed his personal struggle with bipolar disorder and the periods of depression and mania that came along with it. He described the point at which his life took a dramatic turn and he began to experience extreme panic attacks and highs and lows, which eventually led to hospitalization. Despite these challenges, he said he prevailed with the help of therapy and supportive family and friends and went on to graduate with honors and become a leader in helping others cope with mental health issues.

“Mental illness is not always what it seems,” Rahim said.

He noted that it does not always show on the outside and explained ways to identify and address it.

Rahim advised the students on what to do if someone they know indicates the possibility of harming themself or others and explained that they must tell an adult who can help. He emphasized positive ways that people can manage their own mental health through actions such as meditation and journaling.

“There’s no shame in sharing what you’re going through,” Rahim said. “Know that when you make it to the other side, you may also help other people.”

This visit was one of the many ways that the middle school and district promotes mindfulness and equips students with the tools and knowledge needed to cope with potentially stressful and difficult situations.
