The Island Now

On June 25, The Herricks Middle School community gathered together to celebrate its eighth-grade graduates at the Town of North Hempstead Beach Park, where a drive-in style culminating event closed out a truly unprecedented academic year.

The eighth-grade class was able to enjoy a full-length graduation exercise including speeches from Board of Education President Juleigh Chin, schools Superintendent Fino Celano, principal Brian McConaghy, class president Tristan Surajbali, and the winner of the 2020 Honor Essay, Aieshah Ashfer.

Musical interludes were provided in the form of two orchestral pieces.

The first piece, Britten’sFrolicsome Finale, was performed by the quintet comprised of violinists Peter Aliprandis, Jocelyn Chiu, viola player Sasha Stern cellist Devon Lee and bassist Dylan Lee.

The second interlude was Borodin’s “String Trio in G minor, which was performed by a trio, comprised of violinists Aaron Chu, Kaylee Luo, and cellist Preston Chan.

Last but not least was the presentation of the HMS class of 2020. The event was well-attended, and the presentation of the class brought honks and flashing headlights to celebrate the hard work of our young adults.

The evening concluded with a final orchestral performance of Beethoven’s “Trio in c minor, op.1, no. 3, Allegro con Brio” which was performed by pianist Catalin Wong, violinist Katherine Cha, and cellist Ryan Lo.
