Herricks Middle School had an amazing showing in the national finals of the National History Day competition, held at the University of Maryland. Students from all over the world represented their states/nations at the weeklong event.
Herricks Middle School students Aanya Goel, Alisha Gwalani and Stepahnie Sukraj have been participating in National History Day for three years. After winning the event at the state level, they represented New York State at the national competition. Their performance, titled, “Compromising their lives for a better America: The conflict of the Little Rock Nine,” described the events of integration at Little Rock Central High School.
They placed sixth in the nation and won the middle school level Outstanding Entry Award for the State of New York. This group spent hours conducting research, writing their script and practicing their performance under the tutelage of advisors Amanda Banke and Jodi Thompson. Their efforts paid off with this outstanding national ranking.
In addition, eighth-graders Wafiq Khondkar, Scott McClellen and Christopher Zovko represented New York State at the national finals with their documentary, titled “The Fall of Yugoslavia.” They did an excellent job showcasing their work and dedication.
