Nine Herricks High School STEM Club teams participated in the Conrad International Spirit of Innovation Challenge and became semifinalists, and one of the groups has reached the finals round. For this international competition, students work together in teams of 2-5 members to develop solutions to some of the world’s most complex problems.
Team “Celery Sticks” is among five finalist teams selected in the category of cyber-technology and security.
Members Derek Chen, Jesse Wang, Justin Jao, Jonathan Leung and Daniel Min developed the product “C.S. Nanobots” and, along with the semifinalists, wrote a series of essays, created a business plan and a graphical representation of their product of creation. The STEM Club, originally founded as Girls in STEM Club, is led by adviser and teacher Danielle Tartaglia and provides opportunities for students in grades 9-12 to explore the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics in various ways.
The club’s participants think and work innovatively as they review articles, participate in activities and explore job possibilities connected to STEM. They also spend many hours preparing for competitions.
