The North Shore Kayak Club kicks off its 2019 paddling season with an organizational meeting and information session scheduled for Tuesday, May 21, at 7:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in the Hagedorn Room, on the top floor of the Port Washington Public Library, 1 Library Drive in Port Washington.

Founded in 2004, the club provides its members with the opportunity to truly appreciate the beauty of our local waters, while also enjoying the social camaraderie of paddling together as a group.

North Shore Kayak Club emphasizes that it is a non-competitive group of kayakers; with a common interest in paddling the bays, lakes, rivers and harbors of the Tri-State Area, one stroke at a time.

The club is comprised of adult, flat water (not white water) kayakers who cherish their time on the water; and, appreciate the physical and psychological health benefits derived from kayaking. All members have had previous kayaking experience; and, only decked/sit-in kayaks, at least 12 feet in length, may be used on club trips.

The May 21 meeting will be an opportunity to learn more about the club; including an overview of how it operates and a discussion of necessary safety equipment and guidelines. There will be a photo presentation of some previous club trips. The annual club membership fee of $10.00 will be collected at the meeting for anyone deciding to join.

Like professional sports teams, the North Shore Kayak Club has a combination of home and away events. Home paddles typically are held on Manhasset Bay or Hempstead Harbor, while away paddles can be anywhere from the Connetquot River to Northport Harbor to the Hudson River in Westchester County. The club, on occasion, will embark on overnight trips, as well.

Outings are scheduled most weekends from the beginning of June through the end of October. There are Wednesday evening paddles, too, for much of the season. Strict water safety guidelines are adhered to on every trip.

The club also makes a conscious effort to give back to the community. From beach cleanups to volunteering at local on-water events, the club feels it is very important to be good citizens in addition to safe paddlers.
