Laundry Love in Port Washington

The Island Now

Laundry Love is a movement that partners with groups, schools and local laundromats to care for low-income families and individuals.

Laundry Love began in Port Washington in October 2017 as a joint mission project of the Port Washington Clergy Association. On the third Thursday of each month, volunteers from different houses of worship come to the Port Washington Super Laundry at 4 Manorhaven Blvd. to meet their neighbors and offer to pay to do their laundry. Laundry Love seeks to bring economic relief by giving the individual or family the option to redirect funds toward food, medical, gas or transportation costs as well as school supplies and other basic, everyday necessities.

The story of Laundry Love began with T-Bone (Eric), a houseless gentleman living in Ventura Calif. In one particular conversation, a question was asked of him: “T-Bone, how can we come alongside your life in a way that would matter to you?” His response was honest and practical.

“If I had clean clothes I think people would treat me like a human being,” he said. Every single Laundry Love effort around the U.S. is attached to this man. His desire for worth and welcome is found in us all.

Donations to help with this mission are appreciated. Checks payable to UMCPW/Laundry Love can be sent to the United Methodist Church of Port Washington located at 35 Middle Neck Road, Port Washington, NY 11050.
