Nassau County Legislator Joshua Lafazan visited the Cold Spring Hills Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation on May 24, where he honored World War II veteran and longtime Syosset resident Gus Scutari for his service to this nation and his ongoing community involvement.

Scutari, who turned 98 on April 2, enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Nov. 2, 1942 and concluded his military service on March 17, 1946. He was stationed on the USS Haynsworth off the coast of Okinawa, Japan, and held the position of Fire Aiming Controlman during his service. The destroyer sustained a kamikaze attack.

As a longtime Syosset resident, Scutari has coordinated the community’s Memorial Day parade for more than 25 years. In that role, he is known for diligently highlighting the sacrifice made by those who gave their lives in service to the United States and recognizing veterans in attendance at the parade.

“When I think of it what it means to be a public servant, the example of Gus Scutari immediately comes to mind,” Legislator Lafazan said. “In Syosset, he applies that determination to serving veterans through the American Legion and ensuring the legacy of those who made the ultimate sacrifice is always honored and cherished. I am proud to recognize Gus for all he has done and continues to do, and I am even prouder to call him a friend.”
