Bates College in Lewiston, Maine announced the following graduates.
Gabriel Nott, the son of Michael Nott of Port Washington and Dawn Upshaw of Mount Vernon, graduated after majoring in rhetoric. He is a 2013 graduate of Fieldston School.
Bradley Rutkin, the son of Alan Rutkin and Dr. Maura Kates of Great Neck, graduated after majoring in economics at Bates. He is a 2013 graduate of John L. Miller Great Neck North High School.
Allie Furuya, the daughter of Dr. Frederic and Dr. Ellen Furuya of Williston Park, graduated after majoring in economics at Bates. She is a 2013 graduate of Mineola High School.
Ahmed Kamal of Pakistan enrolled at Colby College in Waterville, Maine this fall.
Before classes began on Sept. 6, Kamal took part in a weeklong orientation that included a civic engagement component in downtown Waterville, an introduction to academic and intellectual life at Colby, and an address by the Dr. Frank and Theodora Miselis Professor of Chemistry D. Whitney King at Colby’s 200th convocation.
A graduate of United World College Mostar, Kamal is the son of Afshan Gahanna of Pakistan and Waris Kamal of Roslyn.
Susquehanna University
Jillian Mandarin of Carle Place is working as a student ambassador this year at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Penn., where she leads guided university tours.
To become an ambassador, students must complete a written application and personal interview with the admissions staff. Once selected, students complete an intensive training program, followed by additional training sessions throughout their time on the job.
Training includes shadowing veteran tour guides, becoming familiar with the admissions process and frequently asked questions, learning to present important information during the tour and preparing to deal with challenging situations that may arise while giving a tour.
A 2014 graduate of Carle Place High School, Mannarino is a creative writing and English-publishing and editing major in the Class of 2018.
Dounya Zayer of New Hyde Park has enrolled at Alvernia University in Reading, PA beginning this fall semester. A graduate of New Hyde Park Memorial High School, Zayer is studying nursing at Alvernia.
The newest Citizen Soldiers to complete Army basic combat training and advanced individual training at The New York National Guard were welcomed to their units during a New York Army National Guard battle handoff ceremony on Aug. 13.
Pvt. Benjamin Ngo from Great Neck, was formally welcomed into the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 27th Brigade Special Troops Battalion during a transition ceremony at the Farmingdale Armed Forces Reserve Center in Farmingdale.
The ceremony marks their completion of the National Guard Recruit Sustainment Program, a preparatory training program that provides new recruits with training, lessons and skills to excel at their initial military training.
The soldiers will now embark on their traditional National Guard service to state and nation as part-time Citizen Soldiers.
