Assemblyman Anthony D’Urso visited Long Island Cares, headquartered in Hauppauge, and met with CEO Paule Pachter, who presented him with a plaque thanking him for his assistance in organizing support for Long Island Cares’ 7th Annual Pet Food Drive.

The drive, which was run during the month of April, helped local soup kitchens and food pantries meet the needs of struggling families with pets. Long Island Cares started Baxter’s Pet Pantry in 2009 and has since distributed over one million pounds of pet food, all of which has been donated through pet food drives and corporate donations.

“I appreciate the work Long Island Cares has done for our community, and I am grateful to those in the community who took the initiative to donate to this important cause,” D’Urso said.

Pet supplies and foods for dogs, cats, hamsters, fish, reptiles, and ferrets were collected at Assemblyman D’Urso’s District Office in Great Neck (67 lbs.), the Great Neck Public Library (104 lbs.), the Port Washington Community Chest (63 lbs.) the Shelter Rock Public Library (35 lbs.), Great Neck South High School (17 lbs.), New Hyde Park Road School (100 lbs.) and the Hillside Grade School (102 pounds).

The grand total came to 668 pounds of items including: bags of dog and cat food, canned food, treats, kitty litter, and new pet toys.
