Herricks Middle School is glowing with kindness, compassion and hope thanks to a peace wall mural that was created in honor of the United Nations’ International Day of Peace. This annual observance takes place on Sept. 21 and this year’s theme was “Shaping Peace Together.”
In a collective effort, students and staff members took on the mission to spread positive messages despite the current challenges presented by the pandemic. Herricks Middle School Assistant Principal Gina Horton introduced International Day of Peace with morning announcements about its purpose. She discussed the positive impacts of leaders such as Gandhi and Helen Keller.
The mural was assembled on HMS letters constructed by art teacher Kim Friedman, and featured paper peace sign cutouts decorated by students. Some worked on their design in school, and remote students had opportunities to print out a template and drop off or scan in their finished products for inclusion.
