Mineola community member “Grandma” Edith Kaulbach celebrated her 100th birthday by reading to students at Hampton Street School in the Mineola Union Free School District on April 11.

As part of the celebration, each of the kindergarten classes wrote letters and created colorful cards, which they presented to Grandma as they all sang “Happy Birthday” in the school’s main lobby. “Grandma,” who was born on April 10, 1918, has lived in Mineola since 1949 and is well known for interacting with her beloved community. She is the proud mother of three daughters who graduated from Mineola High School, one of whom, Angela Glassman, taught in the district before retiring in 2010.

This year, Grandma has been visiting kindergarten classes on Wednesdays to read with students.
