Mineola celebrates a decade as a Best Community for Music Education

The Island Now

For the 10th consecutive year, Mineola Union Free School District has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from the NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. The Best Communities Music Education designation is awarded to districts that serve as a model for other districts and demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students.

“I’m proud for our department for being recognized for offering students a top-notch musical experience; one that fosters excellence, exploration, discovery, growth, community, and most of all, a love of music,” said District Director for Music and Fine Art Joseph Owens. “Our teachers, administrators and community work together so well to provide our students with a rich music education.”

To qualify for the Best Communities designation Owens answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by the Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.
