Mineola High School ninth-graders Catherine Dinh and Julia Manevitz were recently accepted into the Institute of Creative Problem Solving for Gifted and Talented Students at SUNY Old Westbury.
Dinh and Manevitz are among the 85 students who were admitted into the program out of the 450 who were recommended. This places them in the top one-tenth of one percent in math of all students on Long Island in their grade.
Over the course of 20 Saturday mornings, participants will spend 50 hours in classes that cover different mathematic topics including algebra, geometry, discrete math and number theory. The program also incorporates topics including problem-solving applied to probability, theory of finite differences, science applications and mass point geometry.
Many graduates of the Institute of Creative Problem Solving have gone on to win prestigious awards, including national and international math science and engineering contests.
