Mineola High School senior Vijay Paliath has been named a finalist in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Competition. Vijay is one of 15,000 students nationwide, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors who qualify in the 63rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

About 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered this spring.

Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
