New Hyde Park-Garden City Park Union Free School District’s Portrait of a Learner has been featured on the Portrait of a Graduate by Battelle for Kids website.

There are only four New York State districts featured on the website. Additionally, the district is the only elementary district and the only Long Island district featured.

During the 2018-19 school year, the district’s Innovation and Transformational Network Committee developed a Portrait of a Learner, based on Portrait of a Graduate by Battelle for Kids, a collective vision that articulates the community’s promises and aspirations for all students.

Portrait of a Learner represents a commitment from the district to provide an educational experience that will prepare students to be lifelong learners and contributors.

In addition to the rigorous academic content, the following attributes were endorsed via input from faculty, parents and community members as priorities that the students should strive to be successful in due to our ever-changing world: Collaboration, Communication, Empathy, Innovation, Learner’s Mindset, and Technology and Media Literacy.

These 21st-century skills and mindsets empower students to work together to solve problems, articulate ideas effectively, demonstrate an understanding of what others are thinking and feeling, take risks in applying content knowledge and inventive thinking to create solutions to solve real-world situations, believe they are in control of their own destiny, and demonstrate appropriate use of technology, among many other aspects.
