Dear Neighbors and Manhasset Residents,

With the High Holidays fast approaching and our current reality still an unusual one, we at Chabad have been planning innovative ways to be able to offer High Holiday Services to the Manhasset Jewish community that would be both meaningful and safe.

We put out an ad in the Manhasset Times inviting anyone that would like to join us at the Plandome Park for a Shofar blowing and Tashlich program (traditionally performed near a body of water.)

We had erroneously thought that this was fine as we were simply gathering in a town park for a brief program and were unaware of the need to obtain permission from the Town and the Village of Plandome Heights. This was an honest mistake; we had absolutely no intention of circumventing the system and sincerely apologize for this error. I would like to thank Mayor Riscica for his understanding and support.

I am pleased to share that we found an alternate location for the program; it will take place at the Manhasset Valley Park. I would like to extend a special thanks to the Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth and Director of Intergovernmental Affairs Rachel Brinn, for working closely with us to find this location.

The Shofar Blowing & Tashlich Program will take place on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 4:00 p.m. at the Manhasset Valley Park (across Macy’s). The program will last approximately 20 minutes and will provide an opportunity for an in-person high holiday experience, for those who do not want to participate in a lengthy service this year. The space will allow for plenty of room for social distancing, and masks will be required, so all can feel safe to join. All are welcome, but pre-registration is a must. Please register at: chabadmanhasset.com/register.

In addition to the Shofar & Tashlich program, we are offering a one hour, outdoor prayer service on both Rosh Hashanah & Yom Kippur, 9/19, 9/20, and 9/28, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. The service will take place in an open tent at a private residence in Manhasset, with the following safety precautions in place: Mask wearing, 6’ social distancing, and temperature check prior to entry. This is a FREE service that we are offering exclusively to Manhasset residents.

I will personally lead the services, and will be joined by a visiting cantor. The service will provide an in-person “shul” experience that many don’t want to miss out on this year and will be easy to follow and enjoyable. Our services will be a blend of English and Hebrew prayers, with explanations and transliteration, allowing all to take part. Expect to experience meaningful, inspiring services, in a relaxed and joyous atmosphere, regardless of your background, affiliation or level of Jewish knowledge or observance.  Chabad is home for every Jew!

Pre-registration is required. Please register at: chabadanhasset.com/register.

Address will be emailed to you upon registration.

If you are more comfortable spending the High Holidays in the privacy of your home this year, feel free to reach out to us and we will be glad to deliver to you a High Holiday prayer book on loan for the Holidays, along with a resourceful guide on how to celebrate meaningful High Holidays at home. Contact us at: info@chabadmanhasset.comor 516.984.0701 to arrange this.

My wife Sarale and I would like to thank the wonderful community of Manhasset for the warm reception we’ve received. Since moving to Manhasset 12 months ago, we’ve had the opportunity of meeting people of all faiths, who have been so welcoming and gracious. We feel blessed to be part of such a wonderful community, and we hope to continue to make our contribution to this community, offering the Chabad signature style “Judaism with a Smile”, making the traditional teachings of our faith accessible in a totally accepting and non judgmental fashion.

We wish the entire community SHANA TOVA, Happy New Year for 5781!

Rabbi Mendel Paltiel
