Michaela Rome has joined New York Institute of Technology as associate provost.

Reporting to Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Junius J. Gonzales, Rome is a key member of the Office of the Academic Affairs leadership team, working with the provost, deans, and other leaders on academic program review and new program proposals, such as developing micro-credentials and digital learning opportunities to meet current and future workforce demands.

Rome also will liaise with the state Department of Education to gain approval for new degree programs, ensure submission of high-quality deliverables to meet accreditation standards and drive implementation and outcomes assessment in relation to New York Tech’s new three-year strategic plan, among other responsibilities.

Further, she will collaborate with deans, faculty, and the Offices of Information Technology and Enrollment Management, among others, to develop digital learning processes and incorporate high-impact practices (i.e., service learning opportunities) into the curriculum, as well as facilitate partnerships with other schools for articulation agreements and more.

“In our search, Michaela stood out because of her experience and expertise in accreditation, assessment, and data-driven planning. As we continue ongoing assessments of our academic operations and curricular offerings and undertake an ambitious strategic planning process, she will be an invaluable member of our team,” Gonzales said.

Rome has nearly two decades of experience in higher education. Prior to joining New York Tech, she served as associate provost for institutional effectiveness and accreditation at The New School, assistant vice provost for assessment and evaluation at New York University and assistant provost for institutional research and effectiveness at Manhattanville College.

Her experience includes undergraduate and graduate teaching; assessment; strategic planning; faculty development; academic program review; development of degree programs and general education programs; institutional research and effectiveness; statistical consulting; academic policy development; higher education regulations and accreditation.

Rome’s research has focused on learning, and she has presented on that and other higher education topics at numerous conferences. She has served as an adjunct instructor at NYU, City College/CUNY and the Fashion Institute of Technology, among others.

In addition to her experiences in higher education, she conducted program evaluations in New York City public schools as well as the non-profit Harlem Children’s Zone, covering a variety of areas including comprehensive school reform, sports and arts afterschool programming, parenting programs, community development programs and health initiatives, among others.

A student of psychology, Rome earned a bachelor’s degree from Tulane University, a graduate degree from Université Paul Valéry in Montpellier, France, and a Ph.D. from CUNY Graduate Center.

She also studied at the Institute for Management in Leadership and Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
