The New Hyde Park-Mineola Runners Club presented a check for $4000 to support the efforts of the Nassau County Firefighter’s Operation Wounded Warrior Program, at the running club’s February meeting held at Tully Park.

The NHP-Mineola Runners Club is a non-profit organization of volunteers dedicated to improving their community and organizes the U.S.A. Track & Field Long Island Division 8K Championship race each year, which provides individual and team scoring for U.S.A. T&F members who can then go on to qualify for other U.S.A. T&F regional and national competitions.

Monies raised by the Club support their annual race as well as several local charities and organizations.

The Club’s main charity is the Nassau County Firefighter Operation Wounded Warrior program—which provides benefits beyond what the military and V.A. provides to wounded soldiers and veterans throughout Long Island, as well as at Walter Reid, Camp Lajune, and Fort Bragg. This vital program is run by volunteer firefighters and participating fire departments throughout Nassau County. In December the firefighter program delivered 60 IPads, 10 PCs, and two packed U-Hauls to these military bases and their personnel.

To learn more about the program and how to help, contact Joe O’Grady at 516-462-4617.

The Club supports local Boy Scout Troop 298 and 544. Scouts who volunteer at the Club’s annual race/community event receive credit for community service and the Club donates race proceeds to their troops.

The Club also supports para- and special needs athletes—the Club is working to expand and fund a greater program to allow more para athletes to participate and compete. In 2018 the Town of North Hempstead recognized the NHP-Mineola Running Club as an outstanding organization for its dedication to LI racing and community service.

The Club’s 42nd Annual Championship 8K Race/Community Event is scheduled for Sunday, June 2, at the Denton Avenue School.
