The Island Now

Mahvish Haleem of New Hyde Park celebrated her commencement from the Nassau BOCES Adult Learning Center (ALC) this summer. Mahvish, who is originally from India, was congratulated on the successful completion of ALC coursework during a special year-end ceremony, held earlier this summer at the Adult Learning Center at St. Bernard’s School in Levittown.

Mahvish and her classmates are now ready to enter the workforce, after improving their English language skills and earning their New York State High School Equivalency diplomas by completing the Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) exam.

The  ALC boasts a comprehensive curriculum and offers classes in English as a Second Language (ESL), Adult Basic Education (ABE), and High School Equivalency (HSE). This year, ALC has added the Pathway to Employment for English Language Learners (PEELL) program, which combines English language education with hands-on job training. All classes assist students in preparing for college and careers.
