NEW HYDE PARK, NY – Northwell Health today announced the appointment of nationally renowned spinal surgeon Dr. Daniel M. Sciubba, as the health system’s senior vice president of neurosurgery and chair of neurosurgery at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.
In addition, Dr. Sciubba will serve as the chair, department of neurosurgery at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center and as co-director, with Dr. Souhel Najjar of Northwell Health’s Institute for Neurology and Neurosurgery. He succeeds Dr. Raj K. Narayan, who after 12 years as chair will transition to chair emeritus.
Sciubba comes to Northwell from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where he served as professor of neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, oncology, radiation oncology and molecular radiation sciences. A distinguished expert in complex spinal conditions, Dr. Sciubba also served as JHU’s director of spinal tumor and deformity surgery, as well as director of the multidisciplinary spinal oncology board and clinic.

We are confident that Dr. Sciubba will continue to strengthen the health system’s neurosurgery services throughout Northwell. Dr. Sciubba possesses the leadership qualities, academic and research credentials, advanced clinical skillset, and overall commitment to excellence that are necessary to lead Northwell’s neurosurgical program in the next era of its development.”
Sciubba received his medical degree from the College of Physicians & Surgeons at Columbia University, and is soon to receive a Master of Business Administration from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. His post-doctoral training included a residency in neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital and two complex spine fellowships at JHU and Shriners Hospital in Philadelphia, Penn. He also completed a research fellowship in neuro-oncology at the National Institutes of Health/Hopkins. Sciubba was inducted into the Miller-Coulson Academy of Clinical Excellence in 2015, an honor representing the highest clinical distinction at Johns Hopkins University.
A highly regarded researcher, Sciubba has authored over 500 peer-reviewed papers, has edited three books, and has received grants from multiple foundations, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He has received numerous awards for his published work, recently including the 2020 Outstanding Paper Award from The Spine Journal; the 2019 Top Paper Award from the Annals of Translational Medicine; and the 2019 Editor’s Choice Paper by World Neurosurgery. Dr. Sciubba also serves on the editorial board of several prominent neurosurgery and spine journals.
