Northwell Health President and CEO Michael J. Dowling, whose stance on social issues such as gun violence as a public health crisis earned industry-wide praise, has been named to Modern Healthcare magazine’s “100 Most Influential People in Healthcare” for the 13th consecutive year.
Dowling ranks 44th on the latest list that includes the nation’s most prominent health care CEOs, elected officials and government administrators. He is one of five New York-based leaders represented. Modern Healthcare cited Dowling’s standing on the list for his ad campaign that ran in The New York Times in August and urged fellow health care leaders to mobilize against gun violence.
“As guardians of public health, it is our responsibility to address public health crises in our communities – whether it be gun violence or the opioid epidemic,” Dowling said. “Clinicians are the ones on the front lines of this fight. The good news is that we can save lives through education, awareness and advocacy.”
Northwell Health is New York State’s largest health system with more than 220 primary care practices, 23 hospitals and $12.5 billion in annual revenue. Dowling’s ability to grow the health system into a vast clinical, academic and research enterprise builds on a legacy of innovation dating back to his 12 years of public service overseeing health, education and human services for former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo.
CMS Administrator Seema Verma topped Modern Healthcare’s rankings while Amazon chairman and CEO Jeff Bezos (third) and President Donald Trump (ninth) were ranked among the top 10. Former Kaiser Permanente CEO Bernard Tyson, who died last month at 60, was posthumously honored at No. 2.
