The American College of Surgeons, through its National Surgical Quality Improvement Program, has recognized NYU Winthrop Hospital as one of only 66 hospitals, out of 680 adult and pediatric hospitals, to have achieved “meritorious” outcomes for surgical patient care.
ACS NSQIP is the only nationally validated quality improvement program that measures the care of surgical patients, with the program aimed at enhancing and improving outcomes. The program evaluates actual surgical results 30 days postoperatively in eight clinical areas ranging from cardiac incidents to respiratory issues, renal failure, infections and more.
The recognition of NYU Winthrop Hospital as ranking among the superior performers points to the hospital’s high quality surgical care and patient safety that produce optimal outcomes. This marks the third consecutive year that NYU Winthrop has been recognized in this meritorious manner.

The ACS NSQIP commended this select group of hospitals for achieving a composite meritorious outcome related to patient management in eight clinical areas: mortality, unplanned intubation, ventilator > 48 hours, renal failure, cardiac incidents (cardiac arrest and myocardial infarction), respiratory (pneumonia), SSI (surgical site infections-superficial and deep incisional and organ-space SSIs), or urinary tract infection.
The 66 hospitals with meritorious rankings achieved that distinction based on outstanding composite quality scores. Risk-adjusted data from the 2016 calendar year served as the basis for the analysis, with that data found in the July 2017 “ACS NSQIP Semiannual Report.”
ACS NSQIP is a major program of the American College of Surgeons and is currently used in nearly 800 adult and pediatric hospitals. The program measures not only the actual surgical results 30 days postoperatively, but risk-adjusts patient characteristics to compensate for differences among patient populations and acuity levels. The goal of the program is to ultimately reduce surgical morbidity, infection or illness related to a surgical procedure, and surgical mortality, death related to a surgical procedure.
The program also provides a firm foundation for surgeons to apply what is known as the “best scientific evidence” to the practice of surgery. Furthermore, when adverse effects from surgical procedures are reduced or eliminated, a reduction in health care costs follows.
As a participant in ACS NSQIP, NYU Winthrop is required to track the outcomes of inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures and collect data related to patient safety and the quality of surgical care improvements.
