Port PAL softball registration open

The Island Now

The Port Washington Police Athletic League is turning 70 this year, and to help celebrate this impressive achievement we are offering a special discounted softball program to the 6U, 8U and 10U female athletes in our community.

D-Backs softball is a competitive program that focuses on developing fundamentally sound players. We use accomplished professional coaches to train the girls and ask volunteer parents to coach the games assisted by high school varsity athletes. All games have trained umpires. All teams play an age-appropriate schedule with age-appropriate rules. Virtually all of our players have gone on to be high school varsity impact players.

Our older teams consistently win regional championships, most recently the undefeated LDP League Champions, a league that fielded travel teams from Nassau, Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan. Despite our competitive nature, we stay true to our motto: we don’t make cuts, we make players.

The $49 fee is possible thanks to internal fundraising and generous donations. It covers everything, including equipment if needed. If you’re new to the sport and need a glove, we will give you a glove. PW PAL has never turned away a Port Washington athlete looking to play and never will, but space on teams is limited so please register as soon as possible. We will field as many teams as needed so please help us be well organized for the spring season.

We also field teams at 12U, 14U and 16U, play year round and offer winter training. Our summer travel teams have played in tournaments in Puerto Rico, Hershey, Pa., and Myrtle Beach, S.C., in addition to local tournaments and leagues. If you’re a serious softball player, our competitive program featuring accomplished coaches, local travel and ‘real’ games with adult certified umpires is for you.

Renovations have begun on the entire PW PAL facility so now is a great time to get involved. PW PAL, established in 1948, is a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization run entirely by volunteers whose guiding interest is the athletic well being and development of our members. This allows us to field professionally run programs while keeping prices at the level of a nonprofit.

We are located in the heart of town on Main Street, adjacent to the town dock, and offer one of Nassau County’s only quality lighted fields allowing night games. Every PW PAL program is open to all regardless of ability, location, finances, or any other program you may be part of. At PW PAL, we simply want kids to play as much as possible.

Full information, registration, and payment options are all online at www.pwpal.org. Questions about or reservations in any of our programs can be sent to pwpalinfo@gmail.com. Phone inquiries can be made directly to the PW PAL Director at 516-965-9883. Scholarships are available in all our programs and all PW PAL programs are open to everyone so please register when you get a chance.
