The 2019 season of the Port Washington Farmers’ Market will officially get underway on Saturday, June 8. The market will be held on the Town Dock every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon from June 8 through October 26, rain or shine.

A project of local nonprofit Grassroots Environmental Education, it is the only farmers’ market in the state that features primarily organic fruits and vegetables. The market has become a popular place to shop for local residents who enjoy getting to know the people who grow and harvest their food.

“We started the farmers’ market years ago to enhance the quality of life in the community,” says Grassroots Executive Director Patti Wood, whose husband Doug Wood is usually on the dock by 6 a.m. setting up for the market. “We are strong supporters of local, sustainable food systems, and we believe that if you talk the talk, you should walk the walk. We are also aware that farmers’ markets are just one of the few places where you can get your food without all that single-use plastic packaging…yet another reason to shop with us on Saturdays!”

The market is anchored by two certified organic farms from the North Fork of the East End of Long Island: the Golden Earthworm Farm from Jamesport and Orient Organics of Orient Point. Other vendors at the market include purveyors of fish, pasta, flowers, bread, olive oil, honey, gluten-free baked goods and other food and personal care items.

Residents can follow the activities of the market on Facebook, including notices of fresh strawberries, apples, pumpkins and other seasonal items. Bring your own bags.  For more information, please call (516) 883-0887.
