The North Hempstead Country Club, in Port Washington, will host the Long Island Alzheimer’s Foundation’s Annual Women’s Luncheon and Fashion Show on Friday, April 12.
Proceeds from the luncheon will be used to fund Long Island Alzheimer’s Foundation, or LIAF, programs and services that improve the quality of life of the organization’s participants, who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and related forms of dementia, and their caregivers.
Jeannie Doherty-Benckwit, registered nurse of AgeWell New York is this year’s honoree. AgeWell New York provides health insurance coverage to older adults, including those with complex medical conditions requiring long-term care.
“Our annual fundraiser is a celebration of women caregivers including our staff, volunteers and donors, all of whom help us provide outstanding services and programs that make an impact, as we say, one family and one community at a time,” says Tori Cohen, executive director of LIAF.
Doherty-Benckwit, of Massapequa Park, exemplifies excellence in her work, leading a caring team of advisors who help our participants and their families navigate the complexities of Medicare and Medicaid coverage to gain access to critical programs and services.
A health care advocate and educator, Doherty-Benckwit’s purview includes managed care, long term care services, home care, Medicare and Medicaid, and community health programs.
Unique among organizations that work with people with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, LIAF’s programs address every stage of the disease, contributing to a higher quality of life over the course of the disease through art, music, exercise and social interaction. LIAF’s innovative programs are developed through research and the keen observation of participant needs, with the goal of preventing premature nursing home placement. Caregivers can benefit from the advice and comfort of a support group, are invited to join their loved ones in various activities at the center and encouraged to enjoy some time for themselves through LIAF’s in-home respite program.
